Roy Cohn: The Master Manipulator of American Politics
In the annals of American politics, few names evoke such a sense of dread and deception as that of Roy Cohn. A master of political machinations, he was instrumental in turning empty vessels into dangerous demagogues, including Joseph McCarthy and, finally, Donald J. Trump.
Cohn’s rise to power began in the 1950s, when he became McCarthy’s chief counsel during the infamous Red Scare. Using a mix of intimidation, half-truths, and outright lies, he helped McCarthy stoke hysteria about communist infiltration in the U.S. government, destroying lives and careers with impunity.
But Cohn’s talent for manipulation went beyond just creating witch hunts. He was also a master at cultivating alliances with those in power, whether it be politicians, journalists, or media moguls. He was known for his biting wit, his charm, and his utter ruthlessness, and he was feared by many who crossed his path.
One of his most significant projects was Donald Trump, whom he met in the late 1970s. Together, they did business deals, partied at Studio 54, and became close friends. Cohn taught Trump everything he knew about playing dirty in business and politics, and when Trump began dabbling in real estate development, Cohn was there to lend his expertise.
As Trump’s empire grew, so too did Cohn’s influence over him. The two men had a symbiotic relationship, with Trump relying on Cohn’s advice and political connections while Cohn basked in Trump’s success. But it was not to last. In 1986, Cohn was disbarred for ethical violations, and he died a few years later, disgraced and alone.
Yet the legacy of Roy Cohn lives on. His tactics of manipulation, intimidation, and outright lies are still used by politicians today, and his influence can be seen in the rise of demagogues around the world. Cohn was a master of the dark arts of American politics, and his impact on the nation cannot be overstated.
